The precision made heavy stainless steel base enables the bulk spool of line to be immersed in a container of hot (not boiling) water, which has the effect of making the line more malleable and helping it to lose its memory, and then gives the option of the line being able to be wound onto your reel from either the side of the spool or off of the end, in the same direction as what the reel spool rotates.
